Project Description: 

 

The project site, located adjacent to a residential area, was highly susceptible to flooding due to tidal backflow from the upstream water source during periods of high tide. This recurring issue led to significant stream bank erosion, posing risks to nearby properties and infrastructure. To address these concerns and ensure long-term protection of the waterway, Maccaferri Gabions were chosen as the most suitable solution for reinforcing the stream banks and preventing further scouring.

In addition to the gabions, Reno Mattress® was deployed along the riverbed. This flexible, mattress-like structure is designed to accommodate natural ground settlements without compromising the integrity or functionality of the protective lining. Its design helps maintain continuous coverage, even as minor shifts in the riverbed occur over time, making it an ideal choice for dynamic and erosion-prone environments.

Both Maccaferri Gabions and Reno Mattress® are constructed from double-twisted hexagonal mesh made of heavily galvanized steel wire. To further enhance their durability, the steel wire is coated with a protective polymer layer, providing an extra shield against corrosion. This makes the system particularly well-suited for use in aggressive fluvial conditions, where exposure to flowing water, debris, and fluctuating moisture levels can rapidly degrade unprotected materials. The combination of high-strength construction and corrosion-resistant coatings ensures a longer design life, reduced maintenance needs, and greater overall reliability for long-term riverbank and riverbed stabilization.
