Project Description:
The slope situated behind Gerai Selera in Pekan Tutong faced ongoing geotechnical challenges due to a combination of high soil acidity and a persistently high water table, both of which were exacerbated by inadequate drainage. These conditions not only threatened the long-term stability of the slope but also posed safety concerns for visitors to the popular local food court.
To address these issues effectively, a Wraparound System was selected as the preferred slope rehabilitation method. This system is a form of reinforced soil structure that incorporates Tensar® RE Uniaxial Geogrids and soil layers to create a stable, durable slope with a natural vegetated finish. The geogrid system offers excellent chemical resistance, making it well-suited for acidic soil conditions, while also providing the tensile strength needed to reinforce the slope and prevent further erosion.
Given the spatial limitations near the food court and the importance of maintaining accessibility and comfort for the public, the Wraparound System proved to be an ideal solution. Its compact design allowed for efficient use of the available area, and the vegetated facing contributed to a visually appealing and environmentally friendly outcome.
Additionally, Megaflo® subsoil drainage system was integrated into the design to rapidly dissipate excess water and relieve pore pressure during construction and throughout the structure’s lifespan. This component was essential in managing the high water table and ensuring long-term slope stability.
The overall solution was not only effective but also practical—requiring minimal technical expertise for installation, making it suitable for local contractors. This project successfully rehabilitated the slope while enhancing the safety, functionality, and aesthetics of the surrounding public space.
